April showers are headed our way for the weekend, and it  sounds like a good time to snuggle in with a warm fire. They say we may even see snow on our Santa Barbara Mountains.  It is such a wild juxtoposition to have a backdrop of snow on the mountains that cradle our palm-tree-laden coastline.

Texas Limestone Architecture

While on a short jaunt to Texas for a friend’s wedding, we were stunned by the color and texture of dozens of beautiful white stone buildings dotting the Texas hill country.  We came to learn that the quarries of this beautiful stone are throughout the region and the pavilion style of stone homes is created from this local stone.  Like Santa Barbara sandstone, this local stone type is both beautiful, practical and, due to its proximity to the area, sustainable.

Here is an example of its use inside a home designed by Peter Marino in a “Lone Star Classic” Dallas home.

It marries well with the landscape and I am happy to see that it is the choice material of some of the cutting-edge designs crafted by  local Architects.

Foraging for Bamboo

We are looking for more finishes, as well as cabinet hardware,  for our Platinum LEED beach house in Montecito.  Bamboo was the hit idea of this morning. I recalled some hardware we used on a project almost 10 years ago that resembled bamboo. It was very unique and elegant. It is also sustainable and has a beach vibe that makes it even more ideal for our project.

Modern Platform Beds that “Float”

As our our current Platinum LEED Beach House Project in Montecito, CA nears completion, we are now in the furniture selection and placement phase. We stumbled upon a challenge that was quickly resolved by deciding to place one of the beds in the center of a bedroom. It is  an exciting solution and will be a great place to sleep, with windows opening up to the terrace and gardens at the foot of the bed as well as on one side.   John asked me to look into platform  beds that could “float” in the middle of the room.  I had no idea I was going to be able to actually come up with one  that literally floats…

magnetic floating bed,

Magnetic Floating Bed by Janjaap Ruijssenaars I found on Fancy Cribs website.

Made of permanent magnetic material, the bed levitates through the power of opposing magnets. No electricity or other forms of energy have to be added in order to keep it floating. Magnets placed in the bed push away from magnets placed beneath the floor, thus causing the bed to “float” in the air. Thin cables attached to the four corners anchor the bed motionless in its horizontal and vertical position, and the bed can be installed both indoors and outdoors.  See a video with the designer on You Tube.

A generously thick headboard with felt upholstery and French seams help create a soft, sculptural and low-profile bed. Why French seams? Because the French know something about beds, that’s why. Woven felt in aqua blue, wheat or charcoal.

The Ranch is located on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica;  it borders the quaint coastal town of Quepos, and is five minutes from the Manuel Antonio National Park and Wildlife Preserve. Driving time from San Jose, along the best highway in the country, is approximately 2.0 hours, or it is an 18 minute flight from the airport in Alajuela. Manuel Antonio is widely recognized as the premiere tourist destination in all of Costa Rica not only because of the park and wildlife preserve,  but also for  its unparalleled natural beauty and international ambiance– a paradise where the jungle literally cascades down the hillside to the white sands of the Pacific Ocean.
