My Trip to Melrose Trading Post

Last Sunday I went to the Melrose Trading Post, which is held at Fairfax High in Los Angeles, CA. No matter where you live, there is probably  a weekly or monthly flea market happening in your city or a city near you. I strongly encourage attending  for the following reasons:

\

1. Tons and tons of awesome furniture! You can find everything from newly- handcrafted pieces to antiques,  and everything in between. Also, most of the furniture is very fairly priced and sellers are always open to making “deals.”

2. Tons and tons of clothes! The best part about buying clothing from a flea market is the fact that most of the items are vintage which means that each piece is so  unique that you will rarely see anyone else wearing the same thing. Check out those fab furs, glamourous hats, leather shoes and copious amounts of jean shorts!

American Beauty: 4th of July Fashion

As the 4th of July quickly approaches, I’m sure  you are getting your celebratory plans in place. Whether you are headed to the beach or just BBQing at a friend’s house, I have come up with some festive fashion choices for Independence day! Luckily, because American flag print is super trendy right now it’s not difficult to find an outfit.  If you have the legs for them, I would start here with these Vintage American Jean Shorts.

vintage, americam girl, fashion, singer 22, american flag, jean shorts, hot, ideas,

giuseppe-zanotti-design, stillettos, shoes, heels, 4th of july, fashion, trend alert,

Then if you can pull off stillettos, The Giuseppe Zanotti Design has a perfect blend of patriotism, sexy and chic.

Also, don’t worry about spending a bit more money on your ensemble as you can wear the pieces you buy after the 4th (major trend alert!)

1. USA Tank Top at Urban Outfitters, 2. Dockers Slim Chino in Red at Urban Outfitters,  3. American Flag Converse on eBay,  4. Sparkle & Fade American Flag Swing Tank Top at Urban Outfitters,  5. American Cutoff Short at Nasty Gal 6. Lita Platform Boot – American Flag at Nasty Gal

My boyfriend Spencer and I decided to go with a stars and stripes combo this last April at the Coachella Music Festival, and I can honestly say our outfits received too many  compliments! Be sure to send us your 4th of July Fashion pics!

Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Floral Arrangement

Last summer I was invited to attend the opening of an art show that I helped work on. I also attended a dinner held for the artist.  The  table was occupied by the  ”top dogs” of the art world and I was lucky enough to sit next to the architect who designed the the exhibition space. We got to talking about his recent trip to Japan and,  specifically, the Ikebana class he took there.

asian, floral, arranging, tradition, class, ikebana, gallary, antique, signed, valuable, practice, art, Japan, Japanese art,

Some background info:  The  baskets used in Ikebana are also an ancient Japenese Tradition.  Baskets all have great names with a story behind them.  For example, the above have titles such as;  Tidal Wave, Budding Beauty and Woman.  The signatures engraved in them are an art form in themselves.  I learned this when discussing this post with John and Gregg and they told me about a Gallery they used to have in Santa Barbara. Their very first show was a show entirely focused on the art of Japanese Bamboo Baskets. They were inspired by a show they saw of the collection of Lloyd Cotsen in New York at the Asia Society Museum on Park Avenue.  The book of that collection is amazing: Masterworks Japanese Bamboo Baskets of Form and Texture. Its pricey though!  John and Gregg went to Kyoto to collect the baskets for their show and wrote an earlier post about their trip and the Miho Museum.

Back to my dinner….the architect told me about how just one class changed his whole way of seeing things as an architect.  So,  from that night on I knew that I wanted to learn more about this magical art form. My friend David was also interested in practicing Ikebana so we signed up at our local city college for a Saturday morning class that I will definitely be signing up for again!

1. David constructing his first- ever Ikebana arrangement. There are many rules a student of Ikebana must abide by; one of them is that all flowers must face up towards the sun.

2. David with Sunsay, our instructor and the sweetest woman ever! Sunsay would come around near the end of each session and help us problem solve our arrangements, making sure we left with our best possible composition.

3. My and David’s final products!

The first time we went, we were so bummed out that we needed to take down our flowers to take them home. After a couple of hours of hard work I didn’t think I had it in me to take the arrangement apart but soon I began to  love coming home every afternoon from class to reconstruct my arrangement.

After just five classes, David and I had not only grown aesthetically but we had also grown to love the ritual of Ikebana. Ikebana loosely translates to “giving life to flowers” and you really feel connected to the way you place each one to compose your arrangement.

Overall, Ikebana is more than simply putting flowers in a container, it is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. I strongly encourage everyone to give it a try. Check with your local city college, pick up a book or check out this website for a class near you. We will be waiting for you to send us your pictures of your Ikebana creations!

Fabulous at Any Age

Many of us fear getting older. I for one, thought that on my 23rd birthday my life was over…I‘m a bit dramatic. However, how are we suppose to embrace getting older when we live in a culture that places so much importance on staying youthful by any means necessary. When I flip through the pages of Vogue, it is hard for me, a twenty something, to relate to the 15 year old models. No woman is ever going to look the way she did when she was a teenager, and why should she want to? If I remember correctly,  my teen years were filled with braces and bad fashion choices. Sure, my body was as thin as a rail, but I feel more beautiful now than ever before.

My hope is that we as a society can change our  perception of age and aging. If you, men and women, are not embracing your wrinkles and learning to love those gray hairs then I would like you to meet the inspiring women featured on the marvelous blog, Advanced Style.  This blog has completely lifted my spirits and has gotten me excited about my own aging process. These women have maintained their individualism and sparkle over the years and I personally think they have never looked better!

Here is our girl again, rocking a menswear- inspired look accessorized with a silk scarf and gold earrings which add feminine touches. Mixing and matching masculine and feminine pieces is an easy way to achieve a chic look.

Damn, girl! 90 year old Edith Drake is sporting a mini skirt and fishnets. Take notes girls, I see many a youngin’  try to wear this same look; however,  it usually lacks the conservative yet sexy and fun vibe that Ms. Drake wears so nicely.

This also means that swimsuit season is here, and even though that means less clothing, it is not an excuse to forego fashion.
